ANNUAL REPORT

1 April 1997-31 March 1998

(For earlier years, please see the last Newsletter: January 1997)

1997-1998 was a busy year with significant development in every area, the only shadow being the loss at the end of 1996-1997 of Jenny Blackmore, our assistant archivist (who decided to go to Africa), as well as the consequent additional work-load. Forward planning for the new construction - an archive store with more than double the space currently available, a new twelve-room accommodation block, and expanded dining, cooking and meeting facilities - has obviated her replacement until the latter part of 1998-1999 or the early part of 1999-2000. Construction should begin during the course of 1998-1999.

The number of visitors and queries escalated during 1997-1998, the library grew, there were fifty-one archive accessions, and over a hundred tapes were added to the oral history collections. The web-site found its feet, and our capacity to respond to queries and to make material more widely and readily available has correspondingly grown.

The staff remains:

Dr. Craig Fees, Archivist, full-time
Maureen Ward, Archive Assistant, part-time
Albert Lamb, Specialist Curator (Democratic/Alternative/Progressive Education), part-time.
